We developed MASS as an adaptable alternative to conventional outdoor shading products. Rather than functioning as a fixed, standalone object, the system consists of standardised triangular panels that can be connected in different arrangements and attached to walls, columns or other supporting structures. The basic unit is a triangular panel approximately 1.25 metres wide and four centimetres thick. By changing the number, orientation of the units, the system can form different shading surfaces for campuses, industrial sites and public spaces. Its modular construction allows the structure to be adapted, expanded or reconfigured for changing spatial requirements. We explored several panel configurations within the same structural system. Alongside the basic shading element, the concept includes lighting modules, combined lighting and solar modules, and units designed to accommodate environmental or traffic sensors. These additions allow the system to extend beyond shading while preserving a consistent geometry and visual language. We also examined rainwater collection as a potential future development direction. MASS was developed within the Hungarian Startup University Program and reached an early proof-of-concept stage, approximately TRL 3.
